Unlocking Next-Generation Productivity in the Field With Axon AI
Building on Draft One, Axon introduces the next wave of AI-powered products and solutions for the Axon Ecosystem, designed to enhance officer productivity, streamline investigative workflows and bring real-time support directly to the point of need
“Axon AI represents not just a single product, but a commitment to continuous innovation for our customers. This will enable officers to work smarter, faster, and more efficiently — driving real change in public safety,” said Rick Smith, Founder and CEO of Axon.
One year ago, we launched Draft One — our first generative AI tool for report writing. In early testing, we saw officers cutting their report-writing time by up to 40%. That impact has only grown: since launch, Draft One has contributed to over 100,000 incident reports, saving officers 2.2 million minutes they can spend serving their communities instead of behind a desk.
But that’s just scratching the surface of the daily demands facing law enforcement today. In our AI Trends in Law Enforcement Report, agencies shared a common challenge: staffing. Only 14% of departments reported being fully staffed, and over half are operating at 80% capacity or less. In that environment, every minute saved becomes more than just time — it’s more presence in the in the field, less burnout, and a tangible impact on public safety.
Meanwhile, the growing burden of administrative work continues to pull officers away from the community. Our survey shows detectives, command staff and officers spend just 36% of their time on active policing (46% for patrol officers), while administrative work takes up more than half of their week. That imbalance can create a cycle of paperwork, leaving less time for proactive policing, answering calls and community outreach.
From day one, we knew AI wasn’t about launching a single product — it’s about building a suite of tools that evolve with the needs of modern public safety. What if AI could extend the reach of every officer — making them more prepared, more present and more protected? That’s the vision behind Axon AI: ethically built, productivity-boosting solutions that integrate seamlessly into the tools officers already use.
At Axon’s user conference, Axon Week 2025, we’re rolling out the next wave of AI-powered tools that improve efficiency while keeping officers focused on the field. These solutions are included in the AI Era Plan, Axon’s long-term commitment to delivering scalable tools at a fixed cost to agencies, and are also available for individual purchase. Axon’s Responsible Innovation framework guides these innovations—ensuring our technology is built ethically, transparently, and with community trust at the core.
Faster answers, fewer barriers with Axon Assistant
Meet Axon Assistant — your voice-enabled AI companion, built directly into Axon Body 4 without the need for new hardware. Created in response to a simple but powerful question — What’s still slowing you down? — Axon Assistant is designed to tackle the everyday challenges officers face in the field: breaking through language barriers, getting quick answers to complex agency policies, and accessing real-time, voice-activated support when it matters most. Launching with three core skills, Axon Assistant helps streamline decision-making and boost on-scene efficiency from the moment it’s activated.
At the heart of this new capability is Real-Time Translation — a groundbreaking feature that instantly bridges communication gaps. Supporting over 50 languages, it empowers officers to translate on the fly and engage clearly and confidently during traffic stops, service calls, and other community interactions.
Axon Assistant also includes a General Q&A skill, allowing officers to ask everyday questions and get immediate, web-based answers — all without taking their eyes off the scene. Policy Chat, a powerful tool that puts agency policies front and center, will be offered as a skill within Axon Assistant in the near future. With Policy Chat, officers can simply ask a question and receive a fast, citation-backed answer pulled directly from their department’s handbook. Policy Chat is available today via Axon’s desktop and mobile platforms, with plans to integrate it into Axon Body 4 by the second half of 2025.
More Axon Assistant skills—like license plate lookup, weather, and traffic information—will launch later in 2025, along with a continued stream of AI solutions that will be added to the AI Era Plan.
Next, we’ll dive deeper into the first two flagship skills — Real-Time Translation and Policy Chat — and explore how they can transform the way officers connect with their communities and make confident decisions in the field.
Connecting communities through real-time translation
In recent decades, the number of households in the US who speak a language other than English as their primary language has significantly increased— making real-time communication more challenging during traffic stops, community interactions, and non-emergency calls. Traditional tools, while still essential in sensitive situations, often take too long to activate or are cumbersome in the field. That leads to delays, frustration, and missed moments for connection.
Real-Time Translation solves that. It brings push-to-talk voice translation directly to Axon Body 4, enabling officers to quickly communicate with speakers of over 50 languages through audible translations. The audible translations allow officers to stay focused on the situation, while the technology actively supports two-way communication — helping to ensure everyone is heard and understood anywhere you can have a conversation.
While not a replacement for certified interpreters in high-priority incidents, Real-Time Translation is a critical step in bridging language gaps during routine interactions. It’s backed by strong safeguards, including officer-controlled activation, clear usage guidelines and auditable records.
By supporting communication gaps in the moment, Real-Time Translation helps enable officers to build trust and resolve community needs more efficiently.
Quick, verifiable answers with Policy Chat
We also heard a common pain point: policy questions slow things down — especially when answers are buried in PDFs or outdated binders. Whether it’s a new recruit or a seasoned supervisor, searching for clear policy guidance during a traffic stop or unusual booking scenario wastes time and increases risk.
Policy Chat changes that. This AI-powered tool, also available in Early Access now for AI Era Plan customers, gives officers immediate, agency-specific policy summaries, with direct links to the original documents for full verification. Available through Axon Evidence, the Axon App, and soon via Axon Assistant, it provides 24/7 support in the field or at a desk.
Built with safeguards, Policy Chat pulls only from agency-approved documents, cites sources clearly and is not intended for emergency decisions, legal advice, or high-risk situations. By removing the friction of finding answers, Policy Chat supports confident, informed decision-making in the field — and reinforces compliance across the agency.
Next-level reporting: new Draft One features
We’re not just releasing new tools — we’re also continuously improving the ones already in use based on feedback from the field.
In December 2024, we rolled out a set of key enhancements to Draft One including the ability to compare generated drafts with the original transcript and automatically populate agency ranks based on agency settings. Today, we’re adding even more:
-
Post-Incident Narration helps enable officers to quickly add context after an incident — such as relevant details outside the camera’s field of view.
-
Multiple Transcripts allows officers to combine footage from multiple body-worn cameras, including video from fellow officers (with appropriate permissions), into one cohesive narrative.
-
Support for mixed-language audio can generate English reports from interactions that include both Spanish and English, with no need for manual translation.
These are just some of the updates that add flexibility, accuracy, and speed to report writing — helping officers get more done.
New AI Features in Axon Evidence
Digital evidence is vastly increasing — our Digital Evidence Trends Report found that 86% of cases now involve it — and AI is critical to making that evidence usable. For years, we've leveraged AI to generate automatic transcripts of digital evidence. Now, we're taking it a step further — with new solutions that help officers better understand and act on the full context of their interactions and further streamline video evidence review.
As part of Unlimited Auto-Transcribe, we’re adding Auto-Translate, which delivers time-synced, searchable translations of digital evidence. Spanish-to-English is available today, with additional languages planned in the future. As with transcription, this feature is meant to be a starting point for officers and investigators who work in multilingual environments every day—it’s built for speed and clarity, not for understanding cultural nuances or generating court-certified documentation.
Today, AI Era Plan customers can now benefit from Unlimited Smart Detection, a solution in Axon Evidence that automates the process of detecting and tracking human forms in body-worn camera footage, speeding up video evidence review as they appear and reappear in Axon Body 3 and Axon Body 4 footage. While Smart Detection doesn’t identify individuals, it enables tracking based on human shape to streamline investigations and accelerate case resolution.
Looking ahead: The next wave of intelligence
Axon Week 2025 will also have a first look at this future on display — from smarter video review to multilingual translation, we’re embedding AI even deeper into the workflows that matter most. We’ll preview upcoming tools also in the AI Era Plan like Smart Capture, Brief One, and Form One, which are designed to automate hours of manual work by extracting insights from images, summarizing case files and pre-filling common forms.
Beyond the AI Era Plan, we are using AI to transform the entire Axon ecosystem—making tools faster, smarter and more capable than ever. For example, with Axon Fusus, agencies can unify live data from Axon and third-party sources into a single, real-time view—while AI-driven image search and alerts help teams assess threats and act faster than ever. Training is getting smarter too thanks to the upcoming Verbal Skills Training, which uses AI to generate realistic, unscripted scenarios that prepare officers for the unpredictable. Innovations like these are reshaping public safety—making it faster, smarter and more resilient.
We spend a lot of time thinking about what could go wrong. But more than ever, we’re asking: What could go right?
Smarter tools. Faster workflows. Safer officers. Stronger communities. That’s not just a vision. It’s the path we’re on.
