In law enforcement, rising above and beyond our fears to answer the call of duty is something we do on a daily basis. Sometimes it's done without a second thought, and most often without much appreciation. Our thoughts should always be on our tactics and safety because we can't count on others to do it for us. Our mindset, tactics and technology help keep us safe on the job. When we talk about technology, it's a good idea to rise above our threats.
The unique observation powers of a thermal imager (TI) are in a class by itself. Now add the benefit of a pole with a monitor attached to a TI and we can rise to new heights of safety as well as observation.
When we are placed in hazardous situations, I believe it is always much better to put technology before cop whenever we can. So let's apply that same principle when we use our thermal imagers. We can increase officer safety by adding a pole to our thermal imager so we can remain behind cover or in concealment while sneaking a peek at our situation.
Before I go any further, don't forget cover is something that can help stop a bullet or weapon from hitting us, like hiding behind a rock wall. Another option would be concealment, which makes it hard for the bad guys to see us such as a surveillance team staging an observation post in a set of brush. In these situations, a pole with a thermal imager attached is a combination with great assets.
There are many examples where this system can help us. I can name a few to raise your awareness and get you thinking of how this system can benefit you in your own mission. So here are a few suggestions for consideration. Let's take an example of a warrant service case or dynamic entry. These activities create many danger areas that need to be searched for threats. It's always better to put a TI on a pole and use that to check a corner as opposed to our head.
Now, we can check corners, search attics and respond to active shooters with a much higher degree of safety. Checking around buildings and fences is also much easier. We can add more to our SWAT safety when it comes to bus and plane assaults and during break-and-rake activities, such as clearing rooms and closets.
I hope you will consider the benefit of accessorizing your TI with a pole and monitor. It may help you rise above a bad situation and help win the day.
Stay Safe!
