The chase began when Manatee County deputies noticed a pickup truck with its headlights out driving the wrong way, and it ended shortly after the driver crashed into a golf course pond.

A man behind the wheel of a pickup truck plunged the vehicle into a golf course pond in an effort to escape Florida deputies early Thursday.

The chase began at about 1 a.m. after Manatee County sheriff's deputies came across a pickup truck without headlights driving on the wrong side of the road, WFLA-TV reports. The driver sped off when deputies tried to pull him over.

During the chase, which was joined by the sheriff's office's aviation unit, the man drove onto a golf course and crashed into a pond. He abandoned his waterlogged vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.

Deputies finally apprehended the driver after using the helicopter's thermal imaging.

The man told deputies that he fled because he thought he had active warrants. He didn't, but now his license is suspended, and he faces felony charges.
