DES MOINES, Iowa--
A police officer was critically injured when he was hit by a truck while helping pedestrians cross the road outside of the Iowa State Fair on Friday night.
Officer Phoukham Tran and several other officers were working a traffic control point at E. 30th Street and Grand Avenue when Tran was hit by a Ford F-350 at about 11:15 p.m.
Tran was taken to Mercy Hospital by Des Moines Fire Rescue, where he remained in critical condition Saturday morning.
The driver of the truck, Keith Terry, who turns 37 Sunday, was taken into custody and taken to the Des Moines Police Department?s Traffic Unit.
A male passenger from inside the truck and several other witnesses were also taken to the Traffic Unit to be interviewed.
Terry, of Belews Creek, N.C., was charged with serious injury by motor vehicle and OWI. More charges could be filed, police said.
Tran is an 11-year veteran of the Des Moines Police Department.
