A South Bend police officer was injured Saturday when he became pinned while assisting at a crash scene on Portage Road.

Feb. 18--SOUTH BEND-- The South Bend police officer who was struck by a car Saturday while investigating a crash on Portage Road has been identified as Brian Kendall.

Capt. Phil Trent, the department's public information officer, said Kendall had stopped to assist with the accident investigation shortly after noon Saturday when one of the autos moved and apparently pinned his leg against another vehicle that had been involved in the crash.

It was unclear whether the driver of the auto that moved was behind the wheel, he said.

Kendall was transported to Memorial Hospital for treatment, Trent said. He said he was unaware of the extent of the injury.

"It could be a compound fracture, it could be a sprain. We're not sure,'' he said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Kendall was still being treated Saturday afternoon in the hospital's emergency room.

According to Trent, Kendall is a sergeant with the department and works as a school resource officer. He's assigned to Riley High School, he said.
