A Columbus police officer shot a woman yesterday after she struck a cruiser while driving a getaway car for two men who had been shoplifting at a West Side Walmart, police said.

The woman also ran over an officer's foot while driving off the Walmart lot, police said. The officer was not seriously hurt.

The police pursuit ended minutes later when the woman encountered heavy traffic and was blocked in by police about a mile west on Georgesville Road near Holt Road, said Sgt. Rich Weiner, police spokesman.

Stephanie Stegmeier, 29, Charles Stegmeier, 28, and Michael Beckelheimer, 25, were all charged with robbery and were in the Franklin County jail last night, police said.

The woman was treated at Mount Carmel West hospital for a leg wound and released.

Police gave this account:

Officers were called to the Georgesville Road store at 4 p.m. yesterday. When they arrived, store security workers were chasing the two men on foot.

The suspected shoplifters got into a Toyota Camry without license plates, and the woman driving backed into a cruiser and ran over an officer's foot. One of the officers then fired multiple shots, hitting the woman once. The officer's name was not released last night.
