MENTOR, Ohio - Mentor police have a person in custody in connection with an early morning hit-and-run crash that killed one of its officers.
The individual is currently being questioned, city spokesman Ante Logarusic said in an email.
The person in custody has not been charged, officials told WKYC.
Mentor police have not yet publicly identified the officer killed in the crash. The identity of the officer, as well as the suspect, will be released at an 11 a.m. Monday press conference, Logarusic said.
Additional details about the crash will also be given at the news conference, Logarusic said. No further information about the crash would be given Sunday.
The fatal crash happened about 1 a.m. as the officer assisted on a traffic stop in the eastbound lane of Ohio Route 2 near Ohio Route 306.
The officer was taken to TriPoint Medical Center, where he died.
Police say the vehicle that struck the officer was a dark, late-model Jeep Wrangler, with damage to its right front.
