California Motorcycle Officer Killed in Crash During Traffic Stop

Vacaville Police Officer Matthew Bowen was conducting a traffic stop when he was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning.

VACAVILLE, California -- A Vacaville police officer on a motorcycle was killed after a major traffic collision Thursday morning, the Vacaville Police Department announced in a social media post.

Officer Matthew Bowen was conducting a traffic stop when he was struck by a vehicle near Leisure Town Road and Orange Drive in Vacaville around 10:20 a.m. Thursday morning, the Police Department said.

He was immediately taken to a hospital for emergency treatment where he eventually died from his injuries, according to Vacaville police.

“He has served with the highest level of dedication and honor, and his loss is deeply felt by the Department, the City and the community,” the department said in a statement.

The driver involved in the incident has since been taken into custody, police said.

Bowen served with the Vacaville Police Department since June 13, 2023. Previously, he worked as an officer in Concord’s Police Department, according to the statement.

Vacaville police said Bowen is survived by a wife, two sons, his parents and a brother.

CHP officers remained at the scene Thursday to continue with the ongoing investigation into how the collision occurred.

The intersection will stay closed for a majority of the day, a CHP spokesperson said.
