N.H. Police: Driver Tried to Run Down Officer Deploying Deflation Device

Jan. 10, 2025
A Keene police officer avoided injury and reached safety when a driver fleeing New Hampshire State Police tried to run down the officer, who was deploying a tire deflation device.

A Nelson man is facing charges after he allegedly drove a vehicle towards a Keene police officer who was deploying tire deflation devices during a high-speed chase involving State Police Wednesday, officials said.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Keene police assisted State Police in pursuing a Nissan pickup truck that entered the city on Route 9 from the town of Sullivan. Keene police assisted state troopers by placing tire deflation devices along the route.

According to police, the truck, driven by 57-year-old Daniel Schillemat of Nelson, continued to flee from officers as it traveled along Route 9 and Route 12.

"While traveling south on Route 12, Schillemat drove his vehicle at a Keene police officer who was attempting to deploy a tire deflation device," Keene police said in a news release. "The officer was able to move to safety and was uninjured."

The pursuit continued until Schillemat's truck was disabled by tire deflation devices at the intersection of Route 101 and Optical Avenue. He was taken into custody on Route 101 near Branch Road.

Schillemat is facing charges of disobeying an officer, reckless conduct, and reckless operation. He is being held on $2,500 cash bail pending arraignment in Keene circuit court.

Schillemat may face additional charges from both Keene police and state police as the investigation continues, officials said.
