A Stafford man picked up a felony charge Tuesday after he allegedly assaulted a deputy who watched him run a red light, police said.
According to the Stafford Sheriff's Office, a deputy was on Richmond Highway (U.S. 1) about 8 p.m. when he stopped at a red light at Austin Park Drive. A Challenger that was beside him ran through the light, police said, and the deputy made a traffic stop.
The deputy discovered that the driver had a suspended license and a registration sticker that expired in 2022. After the deputy issued summonses and arranged to have the vehicle towed, the driver assaulted the deputy. The deputy was not injured, police said.
After other deputies arrived to assist, the driver threatened to "smack" and "beat" them. Numerous empty alcoholic beverage containers were found in the vehicle.
Jamal Homesley, 24, was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, obstructing justice, drinking while driving and multiple traffic-related offenses. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
