More Neighborhoods are using HOA funds for Radar Speed Signs to Slow Speeders on Residential Streets

NBC/KXAN's Doug Shupe in Austin, Texas reports on a local neighborhood in Travis County. County commissioners have voted to allow the Westminster Glen Estates Homeowners Association to install a second driver speed sign from Radarsign--which was purchased with HOA funds--to slow speeding drivers. ______________________________________________________________ Throughout the Glen Estates neighborhood, there are hills, curves and kids--but no sidewalks, which is why the HOA purchased and installed a radar speed sign from Radarsign to slow speeding drivers. It was so successful, the community requested and was granted approval from Travis County commissioners on Tuesday to install another. The community may eventually have four driver feedback signs. "It helps me remember to slow down cause when I'm leaving the neighborhood--sometimes you see that big hill, and sometimes you take off up that big hill," said Andrea Mandel. "We have a real problem so we've taken it into our hands legally," said resident David Scott. The radar speed signs let people know how fast they're going but also collects data on how fast drivers are going and when they're speeding, so deputy constables know when to patrol. "To be blunt. I initially opposed them because of the visuals, but I've come around to realize that the data they give us as to when the speeders are coming through--is more valuable than I realized," said Scott. Scott frequently walks through the neighborhood. He says the signs are a crucial tool to keep the streets safe.
