A Phoenix police officer was critically wounded after a suspect opened fire during a traffic stop.

A Phoenix police officer was critically wounded in a shootout with a suspect Thursday night.

The officer attempted a traffic stop near Cactus and Cave Creek roads around 8 p.m., but the driver refused to stop, according to KNXV-TV.

Officials said that once the driver stopped, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the approaching officer who was able to return fire, striking the suspect.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams told reporters Thursday night that both the officer and suspect were listed in critical condition and that she believes the shooting was an ambush.

The wounded officer has only been with the department for one year and worked out of the Desert Horizon precinct.
