A Texas city is trying to figure out how to proceed without a police deparment after its officers were fired or quit.
“At the present time, we are without a police department,” Clarksville Mayor Ann Rushing told KSLA-TV.
Two of the department's five officers were fired some weeks ago. That led to the resignations of the remaining officers, including the police chief.
“I really can’t go into detail with all that transpired, but we are without right now," Rushing said. "Two officers were terminated for insubordination and that’s really all I can go into."
This week, city lawmakers began the process of accepting applications for new officers. In the meantime, the Red River County Sheriff's Office is providing service to the area.
“Red River County and the sheriff’s office are patrolling for the city, and they have done a wonderful job, so we appreciate them,” Rushing said.
The mayor said she and city officials hope to have new officers onboard and the police department reopened within the next month.
