Resignations of Chief, Others Leave Texas Police Department with 1 Officer

Aug. 15, 2024
Clashes with city officials are apparently to blame for the resignations of the chief of the Surfside Beach Police Department and nearly the entire agency, except for a single officer, who was promoted to interim chief.

A Texas police department is down to a single officer following mass resignations, including the chief.

The chief of the Surfside Beach Police Department and three officers turned in their badges Monday, KHOU-TV reports. That was by four other officers resigning Friday, and the last remaining officer was named interim chief.

One detective is also on medical leave. But he's expected to resign this week.

"This was kind of sprung on me at the last minute, and I'm trying to work everything out," said interim Police Chief Kelly Marsh.

The departures of the chief and the other officers apparently stems from clashes with the City Council. According to KHOU, officers say residents with council ties complained over the department enforcing laws.

Some residents, however, claim the chief created a hostile work environment and wasn't fulfilling the job requirements.

City officials said they will begin interviewing officer applicants as soon as Thursday. In the meantime, reserve police officers, Brazoria County sheriff's deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety officers will patrol the city.
