Louisa Police Chief Greg Fugitt is retiring effective April 1, the Louisa Police Department announced on Wednesday, March 19.
Fugitt has been with LPD since 2002, when he began as a patrol officer. He became Chief in 2011.
Fugitt started his career in public service at age 15 in 1980 when he volunteered as a firefighter with the Lowmansville Fire Department under the direction of his uncle, Fire Chief Jim Bradley.
Fugitt joined the Louisa Fire Department in 1984, and then transitioned into emergency medical services a year later.
He was a 911 dispatcher for the City of Louisa from 1985-87 before working for Brown Food Service for 13 years.
Fugitt worked part time in law enforcement beginning in 1996. He was a special deputy for the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office for Sheriff Bobby Workman.
Fugitt started full time as a deputy sheriff in 1998 all while keeping his job at Brown Food Service.
Fugitt graduated from the Department of Criminal Justice Training Academy in July 2000. He earned the 110% Award in defense tactics and physical fitness while there.
Fugitt achieved the rank of sergeant and led the sheriff’s department in DUI enforcement prior to Mayor Mike Sullivan hiring him for the Louisa Police Department in 2002.
“As I am preparing to retire after more than 29 years of law enforcement, and as your police chief for the past 14, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey that has brought me to this moment,” Fugitt wrote in a statement. “It is with a heart full of gratitude that I submit this letter of notice of retirement.”
Fugitt thanked his family extensively and “every individual I’ve served over the years.”
He expressed gratitude toward all former chiefs.
“The wealth of knowledge and experience you shared, along with the integrity you exemplified, shaped me into the leader I strived to be,” he said. “Your legacies have left a permanent imprint on this department and my life.”
Fugitt said serving as Louisa’s police chief has been “the greatest honor of my life.”
“As I close this chapter,” he added, “I do so with full gratitude. Thank you to the citizens of Louisa for trusting me to serve and protect you.”
