Clayton County Officer Sean Callahan was shot twice in the head by a suspect during a pursuit.

A rookie Clayton County police officer died Tuesday morning after he was shot a day earlier.

Officer Sean Callahan, 24, was pronounced dead at 5:16 a.m. after undergoing surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Callahan responded with another officer to a domestic dispute at a Motel 6 on Davidson Parkway off Ga. 138 near Stockbridge shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday when he was shot twice in the head by a suspect during a pursuit.

Lt. Chris Windley told the newspaper that the officers attempted to arrest the couple, but an unidentified male suspect fought back and fled on foot.

The officers gave chase when the man began firing on them. They returned fire, killing the man, but not before Callahan was wounded.

The young officer was transported to the hospital by his colleagues, but efforts by doctors to save him were unsuccessful.

He had joined the department just four months earlier.

"It's very devastating," Police Chief Gregory Porter said during a press conference. "You never want to hear what I heard today."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
