LIBERTY, N.Y. -- A section of highway in Sullivan County has been named for a state trooper killed 10 years ago in an accident on the road.

State Police in Liberty hosted the ceremony on Route 55 dedicating the "Sergeant Jeffry T. Edelson Memorial Highway." Edelson, 34, was killed Nov. 23, 2003, when his car left the road and hit a tree while he was chasing a speeding vehicle.

Edelson was a member of the 178th Academy Basic School Session, graduating in 1998. He spent almost all of his six-year career in Troop F, Middletown.

Signs will be installed on Route 55 east of the village of Liberty.

"This section of road will serve as a reminder of the selflessness, courage and honor that Sergeant Edelson demonstrated throughout his State Police career to the citizens of Sullivan County and New York State," a State Police statement said.
