Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Scott Pine was fatally shot by a vehicle burglary suspect.

An Orange County, Fla. Sheriff's deputy was fatally shot by a vehicle burglary suspect late Monday night.

Deputy Jonathan Scott Pine responded to a call for a "multiple vehicle burglary" near Apopka-Vineland and Conroy-Windermere roads around 11 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Undersheriff Rey Rivero told reporters that when deputies arrived to investigate the initial call, a vehicle drove away and one suspect -- identified as Benjamin Holtermann -- began running.

After searching for the suspect for about an hour, deputies found the man around midnight. Pine attempted to make contact with him and several shot were fired after he took off running.

The 34-year-old deputy was struck by at least one bullet and was pronounced dead at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The gunman was found dead near the scene of the shooting and a second suspect was reportedly taken into custody for questioning.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

"The citizens of Orange County lost a true hero who was tragically killed patrolling the streets of our community," Sheriff Jerry Demings told reporters. "Thank you for your continued support as we go through these trying times together."

Pine has been with the Orange County Sheriff's Office since January 2011 and is survived by his wife and three small children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
