A Canadian corrections officer was killed and six inmates were injured following a crash Thursday morning.
Officer Rhonda Commodore was thrown from the Manitoba Corrections van she was a passenger in around 9:45 a.m. when it left Highway 10 and crashed into a ditch and rolled, according to CBC-TV.
The driver of the van, a 43-year-old male officer, was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. The six inmates in the van suffered minor injuries.
The van was transporting the inmates to Dauphin from The Pas and was travelling southbound when the driver lost control.
RCMP officials said that winter road conditions were a factor in the crash and that it is not yet known if Commodore was wearing a seat belt.
The crash is currently under investigation.
Commodore is survived by her young son.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
