An off-duty Jefferson County, Colo. police sergeant was killed Saturday while helping victims of a car crash.
Sgt. Sean Renfro stopped to help on U.S. Highway 285 near Conifer and was struck and killed when a car spun out of control on the icy highway, according to KMGH-TV.
Renfro and civilian Samual Yesurantnam were helping state patrol direct traffic when they were hit. Yesurantnam remained hospitalized Sunday.
"I know he was off-duty, but certainly he was doing what he was compassionate about doing - helping his fellow man," Sheriff Ted Mink said during a press conference Sunday. "It hits our entire profession right in the gut because we've lost somebody. Doing their job. Sean was doing his job whether he was in uniform or not."
A statement released by his family described Renfro as "a man of strong faith who believed that there is purpose in all things.
"He was an ever-present parent for his kids, never missing a single concert or football game. Not only did he attend such events, but he was an active dad, coaching his youngest son’s football team. He was a devoted and loving husband. Friends and family will remember his quick wit, sharp mind, and warm personality."
Blair Gledhill, 22,, was driving the car that hit Renfro and Yesurantnam. He received minor injuries and was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood.
The crash is still under investigation and it is unknown if Gledhill will face charges.
Funeral arrangements are pedning.
