Constable David Matthew Wynn was pronounced dead in an Edmonton Hospital Wednesday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer wounded by a gunman at a St. Albert casino over the weekend died Wednesday morning.

Constable David Matthew Wynn was pronounced dead in an Edmonton Hospital after he succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting on Saturday, according to The Edmonton Sun.

"His death comes as a great loss to the RCMP, and especially to his colleagues at St. Albert Detachment, where he worked since his graduation from Depot in 2009.," a statement from the RCMP reads.

The constable had been in hospital with a critical gunshot wound to the head.

Wynn and Auxiliary Constable Derek Bond were investigating a stolen vehicle at the casino when they confronted the gunman who shot them both within a span of four seconds.

Bond was treated in hospital for gunshot wounds to the arm and torso and released.

The 34-year-old gunman was later found dead in an empty rural home he had broken into.

Wynn leaves behind his wife, Shelley, and their three sons.

Funeral services are pending.
