Nevada Deputy Fatally Shot; Gunman Dead

Carson City Deputy Carl Howell was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call.

A Carson City, Nev. Sheriff's deputy was shot and killed early Saturday while responding to a domestic violence call.

Deputy Carl Howell responded to a report of a domestic battery involving physical injury in the 4100 block of Montez Drive around 2:18 a.m. when the incident occurred, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

As the deputies arrived at the scene, a male suspect exited the residence and opened fire on them, fatally wounding Howell.

Additional units responded to the area and evacuated three children and one adult from the home. The suspected gunman was located dead at the scene.

"The Nevada family lost one of its finest public servants today," Gov. Brian Sandoval said in a statement. "I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the untimely death of a Carson City Sheriff's Deputy, and pray for strength and peace for his family and fellow officers during this time of tragedy."

It was the first death of a Carson City police officer in the line of duty by an attacker since 1867.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office turned the investigation over to the Reno Police Department.

Howell leaves a wife and four children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
