A New Jersey State Police trooper died after his cruiser crashed into a utility pole while responding to a call Thursday morning.
Trooper Eli McCarson was en route to a reported domestic dispute in Quinton Township around 10:45 a.m. when the wreck occurred on Quinton-Alloway Road near Route 49, according to The South Jersey Times.
The 30-year-old trooper was transported to The Memorial Hospital of Salem County where he was pronounced dead around noon.
It was raining at the time of the crash and officials said that it was raining.
"Whether it's facing an armed assailant, or responding to a critical call on a rainy day, troopers and other law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect every member of the public," New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said. "This is a tragic loss for us, made even worse during this holiday season, but I know our troopers will not flinch. They will continue their duties and answer every call with others in mind, just as Trooper Eli McCarson was doing when he gave his life in the line of duty."
McCarson was a member of the New Jersey State Police's 155th class, which graduated in February and worked out of Woodstown barracks.
He is survived by his wife, who he married in September.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
