Officials in Park County, Colorado have identified the deputy fatally shot Wednesday morning as Cpl. Nate Carrigan.
Three deputies were serving a high-risk eviction notice to Martin Wirth at 36 Iris Drive in Bailey shortly after 9:48 a.m. when the man opened fire on them with a rifle, according to KMGH-TV.
"Wirth came out on his deck, paused and then went back inside," Park County Undersheriff Monte Gore said in a statement. "Officers quickly followed Wirth inside the residence. As they entered, Wirth fired upon them."
Carrigan, a 13-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was pronounced dead on the scene. Master Patrol Deputy Kolby Martin, an 11-year veteran, was shot multiple times and was flown to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Denver with critical injuries to his lower extremities. Capt. Mark Hancock, a 21-year veteran, was grazed in the ear and was treated and released from the hospital.
Martin and Hancock were able to return fire and kill Wirth.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the incident.
Carrigan coached football and baseball at Platte Canyon High School and leaves behind a girlfriend and several children.
A vigil was held Wednesday night at Platte Canyon Community Church for Carrigan and the deputies who were shot.
