Louisiana Police Officer Killed in Cruiser Crash

Winnsboro Police Officer Derrick M. Mingo's patrol car left the road and struck a tree while he was responding to a call for assistance.

A Louisiana police officer was killed in a crash while on duty early Saturday morning.

Winnsboro Police Officer Derrick M. Mingo was traveling west on Louisiana 4 in his assigned 2011 Dodge Charger around 4:40 a.m.when he lost control of his vehicle, according to The News-Star.

The 34-year-old's vehicle left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree while responding to a call for assistance from the Franklin Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said that roadway was wet at the time of the wreck.

Mingo, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Franklin Parish Carorner.

Winnsboro Police Chief George Wilhite said that Mingo, who worked for the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office for 12 years before joining the force, was extremely dedicated to his job as a officer and was willing to do any task assigned.

The crash remains under investigation.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
