Texas Corrections Officer Assisting Inmate Dies

Gregg County Corrections Officer Robert E. Ransom was providing assistance to an inmate with a medical emergency when he suffered a heart attack Friday night.

A corrections officer in Gregg County, Texas died Friday after he suffered a heart attack while on duty.

Corrections Officer Robert E. Ransom was providing assistance to an inmate with a medical emergency at the Marvin A. Smith Criminal Justice Facility in Longview around 6:07 p.m. when he collapsed, according to The Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Both the 62-year-old corrections officer and the inmate were transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center. Ransom died at the hospital while the inmate was treated and returned to the jail.

Ransom served with the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office since 2005 and began his career in law enforcement in 1980 as a deputy with the Porter County Sheriff's Office in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
