DES MOINES, Iowa -- Two police officers were shot and killed in ambush-style attacks early Tuesday morning.

Officials said that a Urbandale police officer was found dead after the first shooting at 1:06 a.m. at 70th and Aurora and that the second shooting happened just blocks away at Merle Hay and Sheridan at 1:26 a.m., according to KCCI-TV.

A responding Des Moines police officer was shot by the attacker and was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told reporters that both officers appear to have been shot while sitting in their patrol cars.

"It doesn’t look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is who shot them while they sat in their cars," he said.

Police are searching for a suspect and that there is "a clear and present danger" for police officers in the area.
