Miss. Police Officer Fatally Shot; Several Others Wounded

A Mississippi police officer was shot and killed during a shooting that left several other people wounded Tuesday.
Greenville Police Det. Myiesha Stewart, 30, was on duty at the time of the shooting. According to WTVA-TV, a man shot his girlfriend before fleeing by car, and several other people also were injured, officials say.
Police and Washington County sheriff's deputies pursued the suspect. The chase ended at about 8:30 p.m., and authorities fired on the suspect, who was wounded in the exchange.
The man was taken to the hospital and is in custody. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
"I am truly saddened by the tragic loss of Detective Stewart. … Her bravery and selfless service to her community will be remembered," Gov. Tate Reeves stated in a social media post. "We are safer because of the tireless commitment of her and police officers around the state to keeping our families safe."
Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons said flags have been lowered in honor of Stewart. Grief counselors also will be brought in Wednesday for first responders.
"Our first responders need prayers, grief counseling and spiritual advice as a result of our tragic loss," Simmons said in a social media post. "Counselors, pastors and religious leaders will be on-hand to comfort and provide services to our first responders."
