Okla. Sheriff's Deputy Dies over a Week after Crash Leaving School

Oklahoma County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy McCain, the school resource officer at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond, was injured March 10 when his cruiser crashed into a school security gate.

An Oklahoma sheriff's deputy who had crashed into a security gate over a week ago died from his injuries Monday.

Oklahoma County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy McCain, the school resource officer at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond, was leaving his shift March 10 when his cruiser crashed into a security gate that was partly open, The Oklahoman reports. His windhsield was shattered by the gate, which trapped him inside the vehicle.

McCain was pulled from the wreckage by Edmond police and two off-duty medical professionals, and they began providing first aid at the scene. He suffered a broken neck and was rushed to the hosptal.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office announced that McCain had died in a social media update posted online just before 1:30 p.m. Monday.

“This is someone who's invested their life, invested their time in this community, in these kids, in this administration, the teachers and students, and you see it coming around full-fold because they support him just as much,” said Sheriff Tommie Johnson III.

McCain had served with the sheriff's office for 11 years and is survived by a son.  

“Many people have reached out to offer help In many ways,” McCain's family wrote in a statement. “The support from our fellow Oklahomans has shocked us in more ways than one. Oklahoma has always been our home and we now know why Oklahomans are truly incredible.”
