Cleveland Police Officer Dies after New Year's Medical Emergency

Officer Victor Claudio, who had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for over two decades, suffered a medical emergency at Fifth District headquarters.

A veteran Cleveland police officer died Monday after an on-duty medical emergency.

Officer Victor Claduio, 53, had served with the department for 23 years, WKYC-TV reports. He was at Fifth District headquarters early Monday when he suffered a medical emergency and died. No other information concerning the emergency or the cause of death has been released.

"Officer Claudio, an active member of the Cleveland Division of Police, served his community for the past 23 years in the Fifth District," the department stated in a release. "Our hearts are broken, and our deepest condolences are with the Claudio family during this difficult time."

Detective Jeff Follmer, former president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association, described Claudio as "a great officer and well-respected," adding he will be greatly missed.

"The entire city thanks him for his service and dedication to protecting the residents of the City of Cleveland for the past 23 years," Mayor Justin Bibb said in a statement.
