A veteran Oklahoma police officer suffered a fatal heart attack while on the shooting range Wednesday.
Osage Nation Police Investigator Brian Herbert had finished handgun qualification at a shooting range in Hominy when he collapsed and lost consciousness, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
"Investigator Herbert was loved by many and was known for his fun personality," the department stated in a social media post. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Investigator Herbert's family and friends as they navigate through this trying time."
Herbert, 56, joined the Osage Nation Police Department as a patrol officer in 2007 and became in an investigator in 2010. He began his law enforcement career in 1995, working for a variety of agencies, including the Clay City and Sparta police departments in Kentucky and the Barnsdall Police Department and Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office in Oklahoma.
Herbert is survived by his wife and sister.
