A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy critically injured in a fire that erupted in a mobile shooting range in October died Tuesday.
Los Angeles County Sherri's Deputy Alfredo "Freddy" Flores had been hospitalized since Oct. 10 when he and another deputy were severely burned in a fire that broke out during a training exercise at a mobile shooting range at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, KTLA-TV reports. An equipment malfunction sparked the blaze inside the 53-foot trailer, according to a statement from Joe A. Nunez, the lawyer representing Flores' family.
“While law enforcement officers and their families are acutely aware of the inherent risks associated with the position, nothing could have prepared us for his untimely departure due to injuries stemming from the malfunction of equipment during a training drill,” the statement said. “Freddy’s loss is a devastating blow, and we are struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.”
Deputy Flores had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, children, parents, and siblings.
“Freddy was an amazing husband, father, son and brother … he loved working for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and dedicated his life to serving and protecting our community.”
