Ariz. Police Officer Dies from Injuries after 'Critical Incident'

Scottsdale Police Det. Ryan So had been with the department for nine years and was a member of the agency's Special Assignments Unit.

An Arizona police officer died from the injuries he suffered during an incident Thursday.

Scottsdale Police Det. Ryan So was involved in a "critical incident" at around 7:30 p.m., according to the department. Police received a call that an officer was in need of "emergency assistance," and units were dispatched to his location, Assistant Police Chief Rich Slavin said during a press conference.

So was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No details were released concerning the nature of his injuries or how he received them.

"This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryan’s family and his police family at SPD," the department stated in a news release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective So’s family, his team, and everyone across our police department."

So had been with the department for nine years and was a member of the agency's Special Assignments Unit. He also served in the U.S. Navy. 

So is survived by a wife and three children.

The Mesa Police Department is investigating the incident.
