A Tennessee sheriff died earlier this month while he was attending a state sheriff's conference, and he was laid to rest Friday.

Sumner County Sheriff Roy "Sonny" Weatherford "passed away from a sudden medical condition," the Dickson County Sheriff's Office stated in a social media post. He had been attending the 2024 Tennessee Sheriffs' Association Conference in Pigeon Forge, The Tennessean reports.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Weatherford, 65, suffered a severe head injury from a fall Aug. 1. He was rushed to the hospital and died Aug. 2.

"Sheriff Weatherford dedicated his life to the service and protection of our community, embodying the very essence of commitment, bravery, and integrity," Sumner County Mayor John C. Isbell stated in a press release. "In every action and decision, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to justice and the well-being of every citizen. … But beyond the badge and the uniform, Sonny was a person of deep compassion and empathy. He understood that the role of a sheriff was not just about enforcing the law, but also about fostering trust and building relationships within the community. He took the time to listen, to understand, and to help those in need, often going above and beyond the call of duty."

Weatherford had served as sheriff for 14 years and been with the agency for nearly 40 years. Before that, he worked with the Portland (Tennessee) Police Department.

"Sheriff Weatherford was a great man and a wonderful leader for the community," the Henderson Police Department stated in a social media post.

Weatherford's family released a statement through the sheriff's office's Facebook, thanking the public for its support.

"Though our family is grief-stricken, we take comfort in knowing Sonny left behind a beautiful legacy," the statement said.
