An Indiana deputy died Tuesday, nearly two weeks after he was critically wounded in a shootout while assisting with a chase that began in Illinois.
Newton County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Brandon Schreiber succumbed to injuries he suffered in a Sept. 1 incident, according to a release by the agency. He had been a five-year veteran of the department.
"Despite the tremendous and heroic efforts of his medical team, we have been informed he will not survive his injuries," the sheriff's department stated, adding that further details would not be released because "there are still many unknowns."
Schreiber had been assisting the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office in Illinois, joining a chase of an armed suspect with a possible hostage that had moved into Indiana, the Times of Northwest Indiana reports. As the chase ended in Sheldon, Illinois, the suspect got out of his vehicle, and a shootout erupted.
Schreiber was struck and critically wounded in the exchange. The 37-year-old suspect was fatally shot. No hostage was discovered in the vehicle.
