A Texas detention officer was killed when he was attacked by a jail inmate Monday.

Isiah Bias, a detention officer with the Ellis County Sheriff's Office, was working in a holding cell at the county jail at about 3:45 p.m. when the attack happened, WFAA-TV reports. An inmate "physically assaulted" Bias, killing him.

"Occasionally we deal with bad folks. I can honestly say that my staff, over the last day, has dealt with pure evil," an emotional Sheriff Brad Norman said at a press conference.

Norman added that Bias had been with the agency for six years and, as a teen, had participated in the explorer program.

The inmate, who had been initially jailed on assault charges since Nov. 12, was charged with capital murder.
