N.J. State Police Major Dies from 9/11-Related Cancer

Maj. Jeffrey A. Burke, 51, served 26 years with the New Jersey State Police and worked in the agency's operations and investigations branches.

A 51-year-old State Police major died last week of an illness he contracted at Ground Zero following the Sept. 11, 2011 terrorist attacks.

Major Jeffrey A. Burke’s died on Dec. 31, the New Jersey State Police said in a statement.

An online obituary published on APP.com said Burke died of cancer.

Burke spent 26 years with the State Police, working in the operations and investigation branches.

“Please join us in praying for Jeff and his family as we mourn his loss,” State Police said.

A married father of a daughter and a stepson, Burke resided in Allentown and Ortley Beach, the obituary said.

He graduated from Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington before earning a bachelor’s degree from Stockton University and a graduate degree from Seton Hall University. Burke was employed by NJ Transit police before starting his career with the State Police.

Burke is also survived by his siblings and many other friends and relatives.

A service was held for Burke on Tuesday in Toms River.
