Tenn. Police Officer Dies of Suspected Medical Emergency

Memphis Police Officer Charles H. Cathey, a veteran officer who served nearly 40 years with the department, was found unresponsive at an intersection and rushed to the hospital.

A veteran Tennessee police officer died Monday after a suspected medical emergency.

At around noon, Memphis police responded to a call concerning an unresponsive officer at an intersection, WATN-TV reports. Officer Charles H. Cathey was found, and he was rushed to the hospitlal, where he later died.

Police believe Cathey had suffered a fatal medical emergency.

"A beloved and respected member of the MPD, Officer Cathey’s loss leaves a void in our hearts," the department stated in an online statement. "He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, friends, and the community he served with such dedication."

Cathey served with the department for nearly 40 years, serving in a variety of roles. His most recent assignment was with Crime Scene Investigation Bravo shift.

"His contributions were invaluable, and he played an integral role within our department," the agency stated.
