Texas Deputy Killed by Debris from Vehicle During Traffic Stop

DAWSON COUNTY, TX — The Dawson County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the death of Deputy Jesse Perez, 42, while in the line of duty.
According to a press statement distributed by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Perez was conducting a traffic stop Tuesday, April 22, on West U.S. Highway 180 in Lamesa.
"While conducting a traffic stop, debris from a passing commercial vehicle struck him," DPS said. "Deputy Perez was transported to Lamesa Medical Arts Hospital by EMS. Deputy Perez succumbed to his injuries at 1:44 p.m."
Perez had served with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office for eight months. The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating this crash; no additional information has been made available to the public as of Tuesday.
