A 21-year-old Polk County sheriff's deputy who had only been with the agency a short time was shot and killed while serving a warrant in Polk City.

A 21-year-old Florida sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Tuesday while serving a warrant.

The shooting happened at about 3:15 a.m. when four Polk County sheriff's deputies arrived at a trailer in Polk City to serve a failure-to-appear warrant, WTSP-TV reports. No details were released concerning how the deputy was shot, but he was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

In a morning news conference, Sheriff Grady Judd called the shooting "exceptionally tragic news." He said the deputy—who hasn't been identified——had not been with the agency for a long time.

A police procession escorted the deputy's body from Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center to the medical examiner's office in Winter Haven.
