Texas School Police Officer Dies after On-Duty Medical Emergency
A Texas school police officer died after suffering an on-duty medical emergency Friday.
Hudson Independent School District Police Officer Bryan Holley was working at Bonner Elementary School in Lufkin when the medical incident happened, the Hudson Volunteer Fire Department stated in a social media post. Medics responded to the emergency, but Holley died from the medical issue.
"Officer Bryan Holley was a valuable and loved partner of the Hudson Fire Department," the fire department stated in a social media post. "He would frequently go outside of his required duties to assist on accidents and other emergencies in the community."
Holley served with the Hudson ISD Police Department for the past 10 years, and "was much loved by everyone in Hudson, was admired by his kids and he cared deeply about them," stated the Angelina County Sheriff's Office, where Holley had previously worked. During his nearly 17 years with the sheriff's department, Holley was worked as a K-9 officer in narcotics and was a member of the SWAT unit before becoming a lieutenant and commander of a patrol shift.
Holley began his 31-year law enforcement career in 1992 as a deputy constable with Angelina County Precinct 1. He worked at the agency for nearly five years before moving on to the sheriff's department.
"Bryan had a great sense of humor and while on duty, though serious about his job, was always looking to entertain and have a good time with everyone he met to make the school day more fun for all," Sheriff Tom Selman said in a statement.
"The loss of Bryan is a shock to the law enforcement community, family and friends," he added.
An online remembrance by the Lufkin Police Department highlighted his willingness to find "new ways to inspire smiles and laughter every day" on the job.
"One of his most famous antics was arguably the December he greeted students as 'Elf on the Shelf' while perched atop a school awning," stated the department.
Flags will be flown at half-staff in Lufkin and Angelina County until Aug. 28. The Hudson ISD also is asking residents to wear blue Monday to honor Holley.
