A Maryland sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Sunday trying to apprehend a man wanted on multiple warrants.
Wicomico County Sheriff's Deputy First Class Glenn Hilliard had spotted the suspect, who was wanted on several felony warrants in multiple jurisdictions, coming out of an apartment complex in Pittsville, the Baltimore Sun reports. Hilliard began chasing the suspect on foot before the man opened fire, killing the deputy.
Following the shooting, authorities conducted an "extensive manhunt" throughout the region for the suspect. He eventually was apprehended and is awaiting an arraignment hearing.
Hiliard was a 16-year veteran law enforcement officer, according to the sheriff's office. He had worked in several areas with the agency and had recently requested and returned to patrol shifts. Hilliard would have turned 42 on June 22.
“Deputy Glenn Hilliard was a son, a husband and a father to three beautiful children, a brother to those he worked with, and an exemplary public servant to the citizens of Wicomico County and to the State of Maryland," the sheriff’s office stated in a social media post.
"As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic murder," the post added. "This loss exacts an enormous emotional toll on the Sheriff’s Office family, but we will do what is necessary and proper to honor Glenn and support those who knew and loved him."
