Police shocked a Titusville man with a stun gun after he barricaded himself in his home for nearly four hours and fired a gun at officers, police told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
Bruce Wayne Hunter, 49, called 911 from a cell phone Tuesday at about 2 p.m., threatening to aim his gun at a police officer or kill himself because he was served with an eviction notice earlier in the day.
Police initially were concerned that Hunter was wandering the neighborhood because he called from the cell phone, public information officer Todd Hutchinson said. They responded to his home 421 Balsam Ave. in Titusville by 2:30 p.m.
Hunter’s relatives told police he had a 9 mm handgun and a pellet gun.
Nearby homes on Balsam Avenue were evacuated and dispatchers began calling homeowners on adjacent streets. Garden Street was closed in both direction for about 45 minutes, Hutchinson said.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad robot also was dispatched.
At one point, Hunter stuck his arm out of the front door and fired a shot, police said. A Titusville SWAT officer fired at least one shot in return. No one was injured.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Hunter opened his door again and SWAT officers struck him with the stun gun.
Hunter was taken to Parrish Medical Center. He faces numerous charges. Bail has not been set.
Hunter has a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for obtaining property through a worthless check, driving under the influence, possession of cocaine and trespassing.
