SAN ANTONIO --
A three-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department and a suspected drunken driver were killed in a wrong-way crash near downtown early Tuesday morning.
Investigators said the crash happened at about 2 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 35, near McCullough Avenue.
Police said the officer, identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office as Stephanie Brown, was dispatched to a call when an SUV, driven by a male in his 20s, slammed into the officer's patrol car head-on. Police said Brown did not have her siren lights on.
Officers who responded to the crash worked on Brown until EMS arrived. Police said she was transported to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the other driver -- who has yet been identified -- had to be extracted out of his SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near McCullough were shut down for a few hours while an investigation was conducted.
According to a police report, the SUV did not have its headlights on and a receipt from a bar -- dated Monday night -- was found in the pocket of the SUV's driver.
