Nov. 14--St. Paul police cited two 17-year-old boys for bow hunting deer near a natural and scientific park bordered by the Mississippi river and Pig's Eye Lake.
A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources employee searched the park area Saturday after getting reports that people were hunting there, said Lt. Jason Peterson. Although it's archery season, which runs through Dec. 31 in Minnesota, St. Paul prohibits hunting regulated game within city limits.
When Peterson went to the park, he saw blood on a boat and two bow cases, he said. Armed with that information, he looked for suspected hunters.
He found two 17-year-old boys wearing camouflage who were bow-hunting deer. St. Paul police cited and released them for hunting within the city limits near 2400 Childs Road, according to a police report.
They, along with a third male juvenile, also received warnings from Peterson for failing to wear blaze orange during firearm season and not having hunting licenses in possession, he said.
All three have valid licenses, he said.
One also received a warning for failing to register a deer he had previously caught, Peterson said. He has since registered.
"I think violation is common," Peterson said. "Catching them is uncommon."
