Kinston police have taken out of circulation another fugitive spotlighted in the ongoing anti-crime "Catch A Criminal" campaign, featured in The Free Press each Tuesday.
Gregory Grail Dunk, 26, of 1103 North College St., went on the run Nov. 1 after being named a suspect in the robbery of Jeffery Bryan Maynard near the 1000 block of Bowden Street. Authorities allege Dunk threatened Maynard with a silver semi-automatic pistol during the robbery.
Kinston Department of Public Safety spokesman Woody Spencer said Dunk was arrested Nov. 10, just days after being featured as a "Catch A Criminal" fugitive. He added the tip came through the Crime Stoppers hotline.
"We supply The Free Press with the persons we'd like to see taken off the street," Spencer said. "Some of those with bad backgrounds are featured on both (the Catch A Criminal and Crime Stoppers) lists."
Since the information leading to Dunk's arrest came from Crime Stoppers, that organization will be paying the reward money if the arrest leads to a prosecution.
Dunk is the ninth person apprehended by Kinston police after being singled out in "Catch A Criminal," sponsored by The Free Press and the little bank. The campaign began in July and has spotlighted a dozen fugitives.
Each Tuesday's edition of The Free Press features information on a person with outstanding felony warrants who has evaded arrest. The anti-crime campaign urges residents who know of that person's whereabouts to call an information line provided by Kinston police. The first person to call in with information that leads to an arrest of a featured criminal qualifies for a $500 reward.
Of the nine people who arrested, four turned themselves in, negating a potential reward. The rewards paid by the little bank total $2,000.
Currently three fugitives have eluded public safety officers, including Montez Jerrel Garner. The first Catch A Criminal suspect featured, he is wanted for attempted murder.
"It's hard to say," Spencer said when asked for his opinion on the three suspects' whereabouts and whether they were still in the area. "You'd think, with a $500 reward, someone would come forward. In my opinion that's a lot of money."
Callers can remain anonymous but must leave a phone number for investigators to call back. Information can be left with Kinston police by calling 252-939-4020.
