Here are some of the stories you may have missed that ran on our site this week:
Weekend (June 21-23)
Daniel "JJ" Lomax, a part-time police officer for departments in Mayfield, Forest City and Great Bend in Pennsylvania died after coming in contact with downed power lines while assisting at the scene of a crash Saturday morning.
The 55-year-old was off duty, but to him that didn't matter. He volunteered for three fire companies in the area and was known to always be looking out for others.
A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash when a tractor-trailer struck his parked cruiser on the highway Sunday morning.
Trooper Joe Lindsay was on the shoulder of I-75 at the scene of an earlier wreck when the big rig struck his vehicle without stopping.
Stewart Snedeker, the truck's driver, was later arrested at a service station by Campbell County Sheriff's deputies.
An internal review into the 2009 termination of former Los Angeles Police Officer Christopher Dorner was released by the LAPD on Friday.
Dorner, who went on a killing rampage in February to avenge his firing, killing two civilians and two police officers.
The investigation found Dorner lied repeatedly to further his own agenda and that his firing was justified.
Monday (June 24)
A Vernon Parish Sheriff's deputy was killed in a single-vehicle wreck while driving through a construction zone.
Deputy Steven G. Netherland was on Louisiana Highway 8 around 7 a.m. when he lost control of his cruiser, crossed the centerline and veered off the left side of the road before hitting two dirt compactors and a large roadway stabilizer.
An Indiana State Police K-9 was fatally wounded and a deputy was shot in the leg after responding to a domestic situation that resulted in a standoff in Sellersburg.
Trooper Nathan Abbott and his K-9 partner, Kilo, entered the residence with several other officers when shots when off. The officers exited the home, but Kilo did not.
The trial of neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin began in Sanford, Fla.
The case has prompted nationwide debates about gun control and Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' law.
Tuesday (June 25)
A gunman ambushed two Los Angeles detectives returning to a police station
The detectives luckily received only minor injuries, but as of Friday, the suspect in the shooting was yet to be found.
Just hours later in Los Angeles, an LAPD officer and a probation officer were wounded by a man hiding in the attic of a home, triggering a 13-hour standoff that ended with the suspect dead.
Both officers survived the shooting and officials said the attack was unrelated to the ambush.
A Willimantic, Conn. police officer was also the victim of an ambush as he responded for a "well being" check.
The officer was shot in the arm as he entered the residence. The suspect, Andrew Samuolis, was in custody following a manhunt.
Wednesday (June 26)
An Iraq War veteran accused of killing his police officer wife on Christmas Eve of last year pled guilty to the charges.
Benjamin G. Sebena said jealousy led him to stalk and kill Wauwatosa Officer Jennifer Sebena.
A Key West motorcycle officer was struck by lightning while on patrol.
Officer Deglys Chavarria was stopped at a traffic light when he was hit. The nine-year veteran was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center and was alert and conscious.
Texas marked its 500th execution since it resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.
Kimberly McCarthy was put to death for the murder of her 71-year-old neighbor in 1997.
Thursday (June 27)
NYPD Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly called the City Council's vote to impose new oversight on the department misguided.
Lawmakers voted earlier in the day create an outside watchdog and make it easier to bring racial profiling claims against the city's police force.
In upstate New York, a Rochester police officer was wounded during a shootout with a homicide suspect.
Officials said that the incident began when Ralph Strong left his vehicle and was confronted by Sgt. Flamur Zenelovic before the two began shooting at each other.
The 10-year department veteran was shot several times in the upper body, but is expected to recover from his injuries.
Indictments were made in two major cases in Boston and Kaufman County, Texas.
Boston Marathon Bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev faces 30 counts for both the bombing that left three people dead and more than 260 wounded, and the slaying of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.
Meanwhile in Texas, a former justice of the peace and his wife were indicted on capital murder charges in the deaths of two prosecutors
Eric and Kim Williams were both indicted by a Kaufman County grand jury for the deaths of Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse, District Attorney Mike McLelland and McLelland's wife, Cynthia.
Friday (June 28)
A Granbury police officer and a Hood County Sheriff's deputy were wounded and a suspect was fatally shot during a morning traffic stop in Texas.
The suspect reportedly had an assault-style rifle and dozens of shell casings were found at the scene.
A report released by a government watchdog found that the U.S. Park Police has lost track of thousands of firearms.
Investigators from the Office of the Inspector General uncovered 1,400 guns that were supposed to have been destroyed or melted down.
