A Phoenix police detective injured in a shootout that killed a colleague and a suspect on Monday was released from the hospital Wednesday.
Detective Albert J. Casados was wounded and Detective John Hobbs was killed after attempted-murder suspect William Thornton opened fire as police were conducting surveillance near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, according to The Arizona Republic.
When Thornton spotted police he attempted to flee, wrecked his car and engaged in a gunbattle with officers.
Officials lauded Hobbs with being able to return fire and fatally wound Thorton after he himself was fatally wounded.
Casados, a nine-year veteran of the force, underwent surgery the night of the shooting and was listed in stable condition on Tuesday before his release the next day.
Both detectives were part of the Phoenix Police Department's Major Offenders Unit -- which is geared at targeting violent criminals.
Funeral services for Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria, Ariz. with a visitation scheduled for Sunday.
