A blood drive is being held Monday at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center for a Los Angeles Police Department motor officer who was gravely injured Saturday evening in Sun Valley after being struck from behind by a suspected DUI driver, authorities said.
The name of the 26-year veteran LAPD officer, who was in critical but stable condition and works with the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division, has not yet been released, but he was expected to undergo a third surgery today, Officer Wendy Reyes, a spokeswoman, said. The blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Providence Holy Cross, 15031 Rinaldi St. in Mission Hills.
"We're all crushed by it; he's how I would describe one of the true good guys," said Sgt. Mike Zaboski of Valley Traffic Division. "He's an outstanding officer. He does his job very conscientiously, and he's a good guy."
At about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the officer was southbound on Lankershim Boulevard, stopped at a red light behind a Honda Accord when a Chevy Blazer, driving southbound, failed to stop for the light. The SUV collided with the rear of the officer's motorcycle, crushing him and the motorcycle between the two vehicles, police said in a statement.
The "gravely injured" officer, who has been working on motorcycle for two decades, was transported to the hospital. The driver of the SUV that collided with the officer was identified as Qaneak Cobb, 33, of Pacoima. She was arrested at the scene for felony DUI drugs and was booked at the Van Nuys jail. She is being held in lieu of $185,000 bail, officials said.
