Four Albuquerque Police Department substations were spray painted last night in an act of vandalism.
The substations at Central and Rio Grande, Central and Girard, Montgomery and Tramway and one near the South Broadway Community Center were all painted overnight, according to an APD news release.
City employees who are part of the Clean City Division started to clean up the spray paint at 7 a.m., said Bobby Sisneros, the marketing manager for the city's solid waste management department, which includes the clean city workers.
It's not clear when police became aware of the vandalism.
The substations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Albuquerque police officers who work at the Central and Rio Grande substation referred questions to the department's public information officers, who have not been reached for comment.
It did not look like the Central and Rio Grande substation had surveillance cameras outside.
Red spray paint covered the walls, entrance and signs at the substations.
Sisneros said he couldn't estimate the cost to the city for cleaning up the spray painted. He said the city spends about $1.5 million a year to clean up graffiti.
